Roulette 202: Roulette Table
The most noticeable feature of any roulette table is probably the roulette wheel itself. However, the more interesting section for gambling is the layout of numbers located next to the wheel. This is where all the money is won and lost.
Most casinos have a standard long roulette table. This table can usually accommodate 6 to 8 players. The dealer or croupier stands next the roulette wheel. He or she keeps track of the betting, calls the numbers, and spins the marble each betting round.
A standard roulette table has two different betting areas, the inner section and outside section. The inner section contains each individual number found on the roulette wheel. These are ordered from lowest to highest with 1 in the upper corner near the roulette wheel. The first row contains 1-2-3, the second 4-5-6, and so on through 36. In all there are 12 rows in 3 columns. Above the first row is a green section for bets on single or double zero. A European roulette table will only have a single zero. Bets in this area are called "inside bets" or "layout bets". You can either bet on one, two, three, four, five or six numbers with one bet, depending on the placement of your chips.
The outside section contains bets on certain groupings of numbers; these are the "outside bets". At the bottom of the table, just below row 34-35-36, are three outside bets. There is one under each column for a bet on the numbers in this column. Along the long side of the roulette table opposite the croupier are the other outside bets. There are bets for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sections of rows, each containing the numbers in four corresponding rows. You can also bet on either the upper set of numbers (1-18) or lower set (19-36). There also sections to bet on Red or Black and Odd or Even. Each of these bets has different odds and payouts, which are discussed in other courses.
