Sports Betting 123: Super Bowl Betting
The first thing to remember about the Super Bowl is that it's really just another NFL football game. The rules and general betting strategy for the Super Bowl are the same as regular games. It is important to look at a team's performance throughout the season and not be swayed by popularity or a team's recent performance. For basic NFL betting guidelines see Sports Betting 122: NFL Betting. However, there a few conditions that makes Super Bowl betting a bit different.
The general rule among professional sports bettors is to bet the spread favorite and the over early (halftime bets) and bet the underdog and under late. This is even truer for the Super Bowl. The reason for this is that amateur bettors tend to bet the favorite. This drives the odds up for the favored team creating uneven odds. Underdogs of more than 7 points historically win frequently enough to produce statistically significant profits on an underdog bet. Bettors also tend to bet the over where the over/under is 47.5 or greater. In this case the under bet has proven to be consistently profitable.
Make sure you don't bet more than you can afford. The Super Bowl may seem like a sure bet some years but oddsmakers know what they're doing. It's there job to make betting on either side fairly even. Odds vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, check the odds at different books to find the best offered. Online sportsbooks are often a good way to place your bets; they tend to charge a smaller fee on bets taken. Good luck and enjoy the game!
